Thrift Store Assistant Manager

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Thrift Store Manager, the Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting the Store Manager in generating revenue in support of St. Vincent de Paul’s mission and programs by managing the day-to-day operations of a non-profit thrift store.

In the absence of the Store Manager and at their direction, the Assistant Manager will manage paid staff and volunteers and oversee sales, donations of merchandise and internal fiscal controls.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Direct and monitor store operations to drive revenue growth and ensure monthly sales, payroll and revenue budgets are met.
  • Provide direction to paid staff and volunteers; sets priorities, determines schedules and assigning duties to ensure efficient store operations in absence of the Store Manager, or at their direction.
  • Oversee assessment of incoming merchandise and develop an effective pricing and rotational strategy that maximizes the sale of goods and enhances revenue.
  • Ensure cash handling, credit card and voucher transactions are handled to standard;
  • Assess quality of merchandise and merchandise pricing, rotation, replenishment, cash handling procedures, store/warehouse cleanliness and overall maintenance.
  • Fiscal management of Thrift Store operations including daily sales tracking and daily bank deposits.
  • Curate displays to showcase products with an eye to special occasions, events, holidays, and season.
  • Provide excellent customer service and lead staff and volunteers to do the same
  • Handle customer complaints / issues in a courteous, timely manner.
  • Handle other tasks delegated by manager including daily cash count , weekly schedule and other matters pertinent to operations.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous retail management experience preferred.
  • Strong team based orientation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, effective communication and proven leadership ability a must.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple demands and priorities.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and/or move up to 50 or more pounds.

Must be able to sit, stand, walk for an eight (8) hour period.

  • Experience with “point of sale,” computerized sales systems a plus.

Compensation:

Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

Assist store customers in a friendly and helpful manner and enhance their shopping experience. Support the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager by adhering to the policies and procedures established by St. Vincent de Paul, and by performing all functions and tasks assigned by the Store Manager / Assistant Store Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet all customers in a friendly, professional, helpful, courteous manner
  • Address customer concerns/complaints effectively and in a timely manner
  • Accept donations and complete paperwork as instructions provide
  • Assist friends in need in filling referral donations
  • Accurately process customer purchases:
    • Operate cash register
    • Balance cash register draw at the conclusion of shift
    • Maintain cash & change level for cash register
  • Strive to promote and maintain a clean, neat and organized store for appeal to customers; this includes sales floor and backroom
  • Assist with selecting and displaying quality merchandising
  • Assist with other store operations, as needed
  • Monitor inventory level of resale merchandise, both soft line and hard line
  • Ensure the store is highly promotional, well-displayed, well-filled, and easy-to-shop
  • Upon direction from Store Manager, order needed merchandise, not available from direct store donations
  • Adhere to all loss prevention, security and safety standards
  • Assist management with loss prevention and store security
  • Perform store opening and/or store closing when called upon by Store Manager or Assistant Store Manager
  • Work well in collaboration with other store employees and volunteers.
  • Assist with other store operations, as needed, or as may be assigned

Requirements

Qualifications:

Education / Experience:

  • Prior retail or Fast food experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Excellent customer service skills including experience in assisting all customers and donors in a friendly, professional, courteous manner
  • Sales, Merchandising, Marketing skills preferred, but not re-quired
  • Retail cash handling experience and reliability
  • Leadership skills including ability to motivate a diverse peer group

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Must utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills daily.
